Jens Søndergaards Museum

The Jens Søndergaard Museum is placed on the outermost edge of the cliff, at the village of Ferring, in a magnificent setting, the museum with its fine small collection of seascapes and other motifs from the area offers you the possibility of combining the experience of art and nature. Jens Søndergaard (1895-1957) was an expressionist artist from the first half of the 20th century. His fascination by the strong powers of nature, the sheer cliffs at the sea and the lines of the landscape is expressed on the canvas with strong colours and curving lines. The sea encountering the land is often dramatic in northwest Jutland. This is expressed in his very characteristic human figures too. His paintings gives an impression of human powerlessness but also of the greatness of nature.

The Jens Söndergaard’s Museum in Bovbjerg

The Jens Söndergaard’s Museum in Bovbjerg

With its wonderful collection of sea-themed paintings and paintings with other motives from the area, the Jens Söndergaard’s Museum offers a unique opportunity to combine the experience of nature and art.

From holiday home and art studio to museum

Jens Söndergaard bought the holiday home (which today houses the museum) in 1928 and visited Bovbjerg almost every summer since to paint. In 1952 he donated the house and the art collection to the Municipality of Lemvig, with the intent that a museum should be created here after his death. And it was not a coincidence that it was in Bovbjerg that the museum should be located. It makes perfect sense to also experience for yourself the nature that Jens Söndergaard depicted in his paintings. Begin with a walk along the water or on the dunes and then go and experience the interpretation of the same in Jens Söndergaard’s paintings.
